Beaches, Sunsets and Fun in Boquerón

Puerto Rico is well-known for having some of the most beautiful beaches. However, I needed to get away from the hustle and bustle of San Juan during my last trip to Puerto Rico.  I asked some of my friends from Puerto Rico for some recommendations on beaches outside of San Juan and Boquerón was at the top of the list.

GPS Navigation Pretty Useless

Getting to Boquerón from San Juan required some planning.  There are flights to Mayaguez, but they are pricey and I would still need to take a taxi from the airport.  The buses were also pricey and also require a taxi to reach my final destination. So I decided to drive to Boquerón. Easy, right?  No, the drive was crazy!  And no thanks to my GPS navigation system, which was seriously lacking in the topography of the remote area, I was driving around in circles.  So bring the maps!  At the higher elevations, the scenery was breathtaking, but the weather was rainy and foggy making it difficult to see the road signs. As you drive further away from the city limits, the roads are not as well maintained.  I ran into a pothole so large that the impact jettisoned me to the roof of the car.

Aquarius Vacation Club

I finally arrived safely at my hotel at the Aquarius Vacation Club, a beautiful resort surrounded by trees and green marshland.  My villa was nicely equipped and spacious.  The patio had a beautiful view of the marshlands behind the hotel property, and I enjoyed seeing so many types of bird species.

Got to see a tree full of the yellow shoulder blackbird. A protected diurnal bird species are also known as capitán.

Balneario de Boquerón

The beach which is more commonly known as Balneario de Boquerón is a short walk from the hotel.  Mostly locals were at the beach when I arrived, and I found a great shaded spot under a tree full of yellow-shouldered blackbirds known as the Mariquita de Puerto Rico.  After enjoying a picnic lunch, I spend the rest of the day relaxing by the beach and watching the sailboats in the picturesque violet and orange-hued sunset.

Poblado de Boquerón

After my day at the beach, I headed down to the Poblado de Boquerón to enjoy the nightlife activities in the area.  It was December, so the streets were appropriately decorated for Christmas.  I stopped at a local restaurant and dined on a plate of Mofongo while I people watched and listened to the Latin beats.

I love Boquerón. The locals are friendly and welcoming and it’s a great place to relax and have fun.  I recommend you make this part of your vacation itinerary when you visit  Puerto Rico.
