Looking for something different for decorating your ofrenda for Día de Muertos? Here is another cool paper maché DIY craft that you can make with any household items. Like my project for the Infinity Gauntlet, I will also create resin jewels and wire LEDs to them to make my skull special.
Materials Needed
No special tools or supplies are needed to assemble your skull. Here is a list of the items, some of which you may already have around your home
- Balloon
- Styrofoam or cardboard
- Old newspaper or magazines
- Acrylic paints
- Glue
- flour and water for paper maché paste
- (optional) clay
- scissors
- (optional) LEDs, jumper wires, and resisters
- (optional) resin and resin dye for making jeweled eyes

Shaping Your Skull
To shape the skull, blow up your balloon to form the top of the skull. Then, cut up some old styrofoam for the base and tape it together to shape the neck or jaw. You can also use old cardboard and cut it into the desired shape for the base of your skull. I like to leave an opening at the bottom of the base of the skull to aid in inserting and hiding the wiring. After your skull is shaped the way you like, you are ready to apply the paper maché. I also applied some air dry clay around the eyes and cheekbones to give more definition to my skull.
Painting and Wiring the Skull
After your paper maché and clay (if you applied this) are dry, you are ready to paint your skull. There are many images of skulls available on the Internet to give you inspiration.
